Park Ridge Baseball/Softball, Inc. Garry Abezetian Thor Guard Lightning Prediction System Welcome to our 51st season. As we get underway, I wanted to once again relay our severe weather policy to our players and parents. In 1997, we installed a lightning prediction system for all of our playing sites. This system is state of the art and has already proved itself, by instructing us to clear Hinkley Field , 15 minutes before lightning struck the field. On May 19, 1998 we got the warning blast at all locations at 4:30 p.m. Although we had some lightning in the distance, a storm never materialized. If you were out that evening, you see just how volatile the atmosphere was that evening. As a large storm was hitting the western suburbs, an east wind picked up off the lake and stopped the storm from coming to Park Ridge. We were able to get an all clear on the south and central systems by 5:30. The north end did not get an all clear and games were canceled. Our coaches followed the procedure properly. We may have not been able to play in some areas on what turned out to be a clear night, but the threat was real and our kids were safe. I applaud our coaches and parents. Please read the guidelines listed below and become familiar with them: · Warning horn will sound (15 second blast) when a potentially dangerous weather situation is approaching. · Clear the field immediately & seek proper shelter. (building or non-convertible auto) · Wait for all clear (3 short horn blasts) · If no all clear sounds after 20 minutes, cancel the contest. · System operates 7 days per week from 8am to 11pm · Signal horns may not be at your site, but at a site within your ears. If you hear the alarm, clear the field. · If the weather is threatening and no alarm is heard, clear the field. · Lead by example. All adults should also clear the field, We have also installed strobe lights at each park location to show we are under an alert. This should help remove questions on whether or not the horns sounded while you were on the way to the park. Click Here for Thorguard Lightning Prediction Systems |
